Knoxville Family Photos in Sequoyah Hills

Moments in the Margin

As a mom of young children myself, I know that getting professional photos taken can be quite a feat. Saving up the money to pay for the session, finding a date on the calendar that works for the whole family, getting everyone dressed in outfits that you’re excited about, and simply showing up on time with happy faces - whew! It can feel overwhelming. So then to imagine a full hour photoshoot with your young kids when you personally have a hard time getting them to say β€œcheese” for one iPhone photo might seem impossible. I get it!

But, while there are seasons when mini sessions or tag team sessions might be a better fit for you and your crew, can I quickly advocate for why full hour sessions can be wonderful even in this season of raising young children, too? Yes, their poses and smiles will not last a full hour, let alone maybe even 5 minutes, but it’s in that margin where some of the sweetest moments are captured! To let them run, let them play, let them interact with you and each other actually allows for their true personalities to come out shining. I will always do my darndest to get you a beautiful family photo of everyone smiling & looking at the camera, but you may find that some of the in-between moments are your favorite photos to frame around your home.

Presence over Perfection

Choosing to be present in the moment instead of trying to create perfection is easier said than done, I know. I am preaching to myself right now! When we have family photos taken, it can be so hard for me to relax and just let my kids be themselves. My photographer brain starts firing in a million different directions and I start trying to control where they’re standing & how they’re acting, trying to set them up for the perfect composition. But, it’s when I β€œlet go and let God” that some of my favorite moments are captured. 😊 Having a full hour together for a photo session can relieve some of the pressure for perfection that you might feel with a shorter session when you might feel like you need to make every moment count!

A Collection of Black & Whites

When I send out galleries to my clients from my family photo sessions, I include all of the full color images, but I love to include black & white renditions of some of my favorite moments throughout the photo session, too. Some photos just beg for black & white - and it’s usually those moments in the margin!

I hope you enjoy this collection of some of my favorite black and whites from this family photo session at Sequoyah Hills & I hope that these photos will encourage you that this season of your life is worth documenting. I know it might be feel wild and messy and far from perfect, but that’s okay. One day you’ll look back & smile, realizing that these are the days.
